The National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh (NHFB) has welcomed the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection’s (DNCRP) decision to declare its headquarters, along with all divisional and district offices nationwide, as smoke- and tobacco-free areas.

In a press release issued on Saturday, NHFB said the DNCRP issued an office order on July 2 under the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Act, 2026, banning smoking and the use of all tobacco products within the premises and compounds of its headquarters and all divisional and district offices. The order also directed all offices to install visible signs identifying the premises as “Smoke and Tobacco-Free Areas.”

According to the foundation, the decision followed a discussion meeting held on June 28, jointly organised by the Tobacco Control Program of the National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute and the DNCRP. The meeting focused on ensuring a 100 percent smoke-free environment across all DNCRP offices in line with the amended tobacco control law.

During the discussion, participants proposed issuing an official order declaring all DNCRP offices completely smoke- and tobacco-free. NHFB said the subsequent office order fulfilled the commitment made at the meeting.

The foundation noted that the amended tobacco control law prohibits smoking and the use of tobacco products in all public places and public transport, whether motorised or non-motorised. It also expands the definition of public places to include government offices, workplace premises, building verandas, entrances and exits, and adjacent open spaces.

The law further bans the sale of tobacco and tobacco products within 100 metres of educational institutions, hospitals, clinics, sports venues and children's parks, aiming to reduce tobacco access among children and young people.

Professor Khondker Abdul Awal Rizvi, President of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, said ensuring 100 percent smoke-free environments in government institutions is essential for protecting public health and preventing non-communicable diseases.

He described the DNCRP's initiative as a positive example of implementing the amended tobacco control law and expressed hope that other government and private institutions would adopt similar measures to establish completely smoke- and tobacco-free workplaces.
