A Bangladeshi court on Monday sentenced a man to death for raping a 13-year-old madrasa student in the northern district of Joypurhat.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Abdur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, who also serves as the District and Sessions Judge. The court also fined the convict Tk 100,000.
The convicted man, Alam Mondol, is a resident of Palsha village in Akkelpur upazila.
According to the prosecution, the victim, a seventh-grade student at a local madrasa, returned home from classes at around 2:00 pm on October 9, 2023. While she was changing her clothes, Alam Mondol allegedly entered the house in the absence of other family members, overpowered her, and raped her.
The girl's cries for help alerted local residents, forcing the accused to flee the scene. The victim later informed her family about the assault and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The victim's father filed a case with Akkelpur Police Station on October 11, 2023.
Following a lengthy trial, the tribunal found Alam Mondol guilty and handed down the death sentence along with a fine of Tk 100,000.
