A case has been filed over the alleged abuse of a three-month-old infant in Narsingdi after a video showing the child's aunt twisting the baby's leg went viral on social media.
The case was lodged on Tuesday (July 14) by the district social services officer on behalf of the Department of Social Services at Madhabdi Police Station.
Police said the accused, Lata Begum, remains absconding. Her husband, Kawsar Ahmed, and father-in-law, Almach Mia, have been arrested as part of the investigation.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kamal Hossain said the infant, Rizik, would be sent to the district hospital for an X-ray to determine whether any injury had been sustained. While the family claims the child's leg was not broken, police said there is evidence that the accused twisted the baby's leg.
The incident, which reportedly occurred about five days earlier, came to light after the video surfaced online on July 14. According to police, the footage was accidentally recorded on a mobile phone secretly left running by the child's mother during a family dispute.
Although the baby's parents initially described the incident as a family matter, saying it had been resolved and that they did not wish to pursue legal action, police said the state had a responsibility to act given the seriousness of the alleged abuse.
Investigators also dismissed the family's claim that the viral video had been created using artificial intelligence, saying preliminary findings indicate the footage is authentic. Police are continuing efforts to arrest the accused and are investigating how the video was leaked online.
