15 Witnesses Testify in Graft Case Against Former IGP Benazir Ahmed
Testimony from 15 prosecution witnesses has been recorded in the corruption case against former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed over allegations of amassing illegal wealth worth more than Tk 11 crore.
The case came up for hearing on Thursday before Dhaka Special Judge Court-5, where Md Faisal Kabir, Assistant Director (Technical) of the BTMC Textile Directorate, testified as a prosecution witness.
As Benazir remains absconding, the defence was unable to cross-examine the witnesses. The court fixed August 17 for the next hearing.
According to Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam, 15 of the 28 prosecution witnesses have testified since the court framed charges on May 3, formally beginning the trial.
The case was filed on December 15, 2024, by ACC Deputy Director Hafizul Islam. The charge sheet accuses Benazir of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 11.04 crore beyond his known sources of income, concealing the wealth and laundering money through investments, bank accounts, businesses and joint ventures.
