Eviction drive sparks damage claims in Kendua

A government drive to recover allegedly encroached public land in Kendua has triggered allegations of vandalism and looting by an affected family, claims the local administration has denied.

The eviction was carried out on Monday in Raypur village under Maska Union by a mobile court led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Naim-Ul Islam Chowdhury. Law enforcers and land office officials joined the operation, during which the administration said around one decimal of government-owned halot (public land) was recovered.

The drive followed a complaint filed on June 28 by local resident Sharif Hasan Bhuiyan, alleging illegal occupation of government land recorded under Raypur Mouza. A subsequent survey reportedly confirmed the encroachment, prompting the eviction.

On Tuesday, resident Tainus Shahi, who claimed to have been affected by the drive, alleged that officials measured beyond the disputed land into his occupied property and carried out the eviction without prior notice.

He also claimed that his house was damaged during the operation and that some belongings went missing. He said he would seek legal remedy and request a fresh land survey.

Complainant Sharif Hasan Bhuiyan, however, said the recovered land had long remained under illegal occupation, causing inconvenience to local residents. He welcomed the administration's move to reclaim the public property.

Rejecting the allegations, Executive Magistrate Md Naim-Ul Islam Chowdhury said he remained at the site from 11:00am to 2:00pm and witnessed no incidents of vandalism or looting.

"The land was identified as illegally occupied through official measurement and was recovered in accordance with the law. Drives to protect government property will continue," he said.
