Three flats in a seven-storey building were burgled in Srinagar upazila of Munshiganj on Wednesday, with cash, mobile phones, a laptop and other valuables stolen.

The incident took place at the building of Saudi expatriate Shahidul Islam in the Sheikhpara Bhai Bhai Market area on Bhagyakul Road in the upazila during the afternoon. The burglars broke the locks of the flats and entered them while the residents were away. They also attempted to break into another flat but failed to enter as an additional lock prevented them from opening the door.

Abdur Rashid, a resident of the ground floor and proprietor of Messrs Business Vision, said he had rented the flat to run his dealership business. After locking the door, he went to his home in the College Gate area. Upon receiving news of the burglary, he returned and found the lock broken. The burglars allegedly broke open a steel drawer and stole Tk 200,000 in cash and a laptop worth around Tk 86,000.

Swarna Akter, a resident of the fourth floor, said she had locked her flat and gone to her father's house in the Deulbhog area. Later, her son's tutor arrived to teach him and found the lock broken. The burglars had attempted to enter the flat but failed because of an additional lock on the door.

Meanwhile, Saidur Rahman, a resident of the sixth floor, said he returned home after his daughter's examination and found the door lock broken. He later discovered that a mobile phone, his daughter's savings and a clay money bank had been stolen. Other belongings inside the flat were also found scattered.

The incident has caused concern among local residents, who have demanded that the burglars be identified and brought to justice at the earliest.

Srinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Juel Mia said an investigation team had been sent to the scene. Legal action would be taken after identifying those involved in the burglary, he added.
