Police have detained a 40-year-old man for allegedly attempting to steal a newly installed artificial intelligence (AI) camera on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Cumilla’s Daudkandi.
The accused, identified as Faruk, son of Dhanu Mia of Malikhil area in Daudkandi, was detained in the Raipur area of the highway around 1:30am on Tuesday while allegedly trying to climb onto the AI camera. Local residents caught him and alerted the national emergency service 999. Highway police later detained him and handed him over to Daudkandi Model Police Station.
Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Premdas Roy said Faruk was seen attempting to climb onto the camera in the Raipur area. Police took him into custody following the locals’ call.
Daudkandi Police Station OC Md Sajedul Islam said the highway police did not file a separate complaint over the alleged attempt to steal the AI camera. Faruk was therefore shown arrested in an old theft case and sent to Cumilla Jail around noon on Wednesday.
Mohammad Shahinur Alam Khan, superintendent of police of the Highway Police’s Cumilla region, confirmed the matter on Wednesday evening. He said police were working to ensure the security of the cameras installed along the highway, describing them as national assets that would help improve highway security.
