A 22-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by miscreants in the Ashibigha area under Labanchara Police Station in Khulna city on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Manjurul Islam, son of Khokon, a resident of the Labanchara area. He worked as a day labourer. The shooting took place around 6pm while Manjurul was in the area. Police suspect that the incident may have stemmed from a dispute over a football match.
According to family members, Manjurul had previously been a student but could not continue his studies due to financial difficulties. He later worked with his father in centering work. He did not go to work on Wednesday. Relatives said he was known in the area as a good-natured young man and had no known previous enmity with anyone.
The relatives said a group of miscreants approached Manjurul in the evening, shot him and fled. He was rescued in critical condition and taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, they said.
Labanchara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Syed Mosharraf Hossain said a football match is held at an open field in the Ashibigha area. The shooting may have resulted from a dispute related to the match, based on preliminary information, he said.
However, the actual motive behind the killing would be confirmed after investigation, the OC added.
