Fire in Chirirbandar, goods worth Tk 16 lakh destroyed

A shopkeeper was left penniless after a devastating fire completely gutted a grocery shop at Binnakuri Bazar of Chirirbandar upazila in Dinajpur.

The incident took place around 1:30AM on Sunday at a grocery store named Abul Store in Binnakuri Bazar.

According to eyewitnesses, blazes were leaping from the closed Abul Store while they were returning home after closing their shops around 1:30AM. They rushed to the spot and tried to extinguish the fire with a few others.

Although the shop owner and the fire service were informed, the contents of the shop were completely reduced to ashes before the fire could be fully put out.

Shop owner Abul Hossain said, "I closed the shop around 11:30PM, went home, ate, and slept. Later, a local TV repairer named Khadimul informed me over the phone, and I rushed to the shop. All goods in my shop were burnt to ashes. I have been ruined as goods worth around Tk 16 lakh, accumulated over 22 to 23 years, were destroyed."

Station Fire Leader Abu Sayeed of the Fire Service and Civil Defence said fire personnel reached the spot quickly upon receiving the news and brought the blaze under control after a one-hour effort with the help of locals.

He said goods in Abul Store were completely destroyed, while a clothing store, an RFL plastic goods shop, a TV repair shop, and another grocery shop were partially damaged.

However, the specific cause of the fire could not be determined immediately, though it might have been caused by a short circuit, he added, noting that the matter is under investigation.

Chirirbandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahmudun Nabi said two separate general diaries (GD) were filed with the police station; one by the police and another on behalf of the affected shopkeeper.
