Journos demand justice for July Uprising killings

Journalist leaders have called for the trial of those responsible for the killings during the July Uprising and demanded rehabilitation for those injured. They made the call at a rally and gathering in Dhaka, marking the second anniversary of the student-led Mass Uprising.

The programme was organised by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club on Wednesday. Before the gathering, journalists held a victory rally that marched through different roads in the capital.

Speaking at the event, BFUJ General Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury said the previous government fell because of the united movement of students and the public. He said many students, children and ordinary people were killed or injured during the uprising. He urged the government to rehabilitate the injured and support the families of those who died.

He also called for a speedy and fair trial of those responsible for the killings and alleged human rights violations.

He said those found guilty should be punished under the law.

DUJ President Md Shahidul Islam also demanded justice for the victims. He said journalists expect the government to ensure a quick and impartial trial of those accused of the killings and other serious offences. He also urged journalists to remain united in defending democracy, press freedom and the rights of the people.
