Swapon calls for equitable, accountable state inspired by July Uprising

BARISHAL, Aug 5: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today called on all to work together to build an equitable, accountable and humane state inspired by the spirit of the July Mass Uprising.

Speaking at a discussion and reception for families of the July martyrs at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Barishal, organised to mark July Mass Uprising Day 2026, the minister said the ideals of the historic movement must remain alive in the hearts of every citizen.

He said the spirit forged through the sacrifices and aspirations of thousands of people must not be undermined by any force, urging everyone to remain united and vigilant.

Swapon said that a group and a single family had monopolised democracy and people’s rights for years, weakening democratic institutions and depriving citizens of their voting rights. 

He urged people from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation, religion or ethnicity, to forge unity to protect democracy.

The minister said attempts had been made to divide people through intimidation, greed and promises of power, but conscious citizens rejected such temptations and prioritised the country’s interests.

He emphasised that the July Mass Uprising was not the work of a few individuals but a collective resistance against prolonged deprivation, injustice and oppression. 

The strength of this movement is laying in the unity, courage and unwavering faith of the people in democracy,  he said.

Barishal Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed chaired the programme, where government officials, political leaders, media representatives and families of the July martyrs were present.
