Indian held by locals in Panchagar after BSF detains a Bangladeshi

Locals of Panchagar border captured an Indian, named Dipankar Gop, 35 as a reaction to Indian Border Security Force’s (BSF) detainment of an elderly Bangladeshi citizen named Tamiz Uddin, 78.

A company commander-level flag meeting had already held between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF to resolve the matter. However, no agreement could be reached.

Residents detained the Indian national near sub-pillar 12 of main pillar 742 along the Birajot border under Satmera Union in Panchagar Sadar Upazila on Saturday morning.

According to locals, 78-year-old farmer Tamiz Uddin went to the Birajot border on Wednesday morning to search for his lost cattle. While searching, BSF personnel from Chaulhati camp detained him from the area.

Consequently, when an Indian named Dipankar Gop entered Bangladeshi sugarcane field from a nearby border tea garden, local residents apprehended him as he had already crossed into Bangladeshi territory and was picking sugarcane.

Residents demanded that the Indian national will only be released once the BSF returns the detained Bangladeshi elderly citizen.
