Dainik Probaho office attacked in Khulna, Staff Beaten

Miscreants attacked the office of the daily newspaper Dainik Probaho in Khulna late Sunday night, beating up Chief Pasterman Faysal Ahmed.

The incident took place at around 2:00AM. Police visited the spot on Monday morning after receiving information.

According to police and locals, Faysal Ahmed and another employee were working inside the office at night. When Faysal went to the restroom, he heard loud noises coming from the slum behind the office building and tried to look through a gap.

Sensing his presence, several miscreants from the slum forcefully entered the newspaper office and beat him up before fleeing the scene.

Recounting the incident, Faysal said several intoxicated men stormed into the office and physically assaulted him. He alleged that various illegal activities take place in the slum behind the office, though he could not specify the nature of the business. On Monday morning, the newspaper authority informed the police.

Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rafiqul Islam said, "Police inspected the scene upon receiving news. Questioning locals revealed that the intruders entered the newspaper building following a rumor that bricks were thrown into the slum. We spoke with the newspaper authorities, and proper action will be taken if they file a formal complaint."

MUJ Expresses Concern

Meanwhile, leaders of the Metropolitan Journalists Union Khulna (MUJ) expressed deep concern over the attack, strongly condemning the incident and demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.

In a statement, the leaders said that a dastardly attack on a media office at night is an assault on press freedom and the right to free expression.

The statement was issued by MUJ Acting President Atiar Parvez, General Secretary Hasan Ahmed Mullah, Treasurer AHM Shamimuzzaman, and executive committee members.

Former Vice Presidents of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Alhaj Abu Tayeb and Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain, along with former executive member Sheikh Didarul Alam, issued a similar joint statement condemning the attack.
