Power crisis may last another week

The power sector of Bangladesh faces huge challenges in terms of lack of LNG, coal, bad weather and reduced electricity imports from India. Authorities say that the crisis can persist for another week.
According to official sources, there is a shortage of over 3,000 MW per day in the national grid. At one time, the total demand was 17,237 MW against a supply of 13,855 MW, resulting in a shortage of 3,382 MW. The shortage was later increased to 3,757 MW.
The gas shortages have reduced the power generation to a very low level. The gas-fired power plants, having a total capacity of over 12,000 MW, have now generated about 3,000-4,000 MW. Coal shortage and reduced imports from India have made the situation worse.Bad weather has disrupted the LNG supplies through the Summit terminal located in Maheshkhali, whereas the Excelerate Energy terminal is operating far below its capacity because of technical difficulties.The people in the rural areas face the worst situation with some places going without power for 15-20 hours a day. Even Dhaka and its surroundings are witnessing repeated power outages, affecting the normal life and business activities.
