Remembering Amjad Hossain on his birthday

Legendary film director, screenwriter, lyricist and actor Amjad Hossain was remembered on his birth anniversary today, August 14.

Born in Jamalpur in 1942, Hossain started his career in literature through writing rhymes and poetry. In the 1960s, he settled in Dhaka and got into literature and theatre.

He made his acting debut in 1961 through Tomar Amar. Later on, he became an assistant to famous filmmaker Zahir Raihan and also gave some great dialogues and played Madhu in his classic Jibon Theke Neya (1970).

He made his directorial debut in 1967 through Agun Niye Khela. His other iconic films include Nayanmoni, Golapi Ekhon Traine, Sundori, Kasai, Bhat De and Hiramoti. He mostly depicted the sufferings of peasants and laborers in his movies.

He won 12 National Film Awards and six BACHSAS Awards, which includes five National Film Awards for Golapi Ekhon Traine in 1978. He also bagged Ekushey Padak, Independence Award and Bangla Academy Literary Award.

Amjad Hossain passed away on December 14, 2018, at the age of 76 while taking treatment in Bangkok.
