
NAOGAON, Aug 14: A tree-planting programme has begun at around 8,000 religious institutions in Naogaon district as part of efforts to protect the environment and increase greenery.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam inaugurated the programme by planting saplings on the premises of Mosharpur Jame Mosque in Naogaon Sadar Upazila on Friday afternoon. The district administration organised the programme.
Under the initiative, two fruit and forest tree saplings will be planted at each of the around 8,000 religious institutions across the district. About 7,000 of the institutions are mosques.
Naogaon Zilla Parishad Administrator Abu Bakkar Siddique Nannu, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Masudul Haque, Naogaon Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shahin Mahmud, Islamic Foundation Naogaon Deputy Director Md Maruf Raihan, local dignitaries and residents attended the inauguration.
Speaking at the event, DC Saiful Islam said planting trees at religious institutions would contribute to environmental protection while fruit trees would help meet local demand for fruits in the future.
He urged devotees and authorities of religious institutions to take initiatives to plant more trees on their premises.
