The government will soon recruit 100,000 health workers, including doctors, as part of efforts to reform the country’s healthcare sector, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said on Sunday.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after making an unannounced visit to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex in Jhenaidah.

The minister said the government was conducting surprise inspections of hospitals across the country to assess how healthcare could be made more accessible to people.

“All upazila hospitals have already been upgraded to 100 beds,” he said.

He said the government had taken a long-term plan to address shortages of doctors and medicines and simplify services for patients, with the aim of restoring public confidence in government healthcare.

Ten-bed dialysis units would soon be introduced at upazila hospitals, while modern pathology and physiotherapy services would also be expanded, he said.

Sakhawat said adequate stocks of essential medicines, family planning supplies and vaccines were currently available.

He also said the government would soon launch a health card programme and take steps to improve services at union-level health and family welfare centres.
