Johnny Depp could return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirming that discussions about Depp’s involvement are underway.
Speaking to Deadline at Disney’s D23 event, Bruckheimer said the franchise is working on the screenplay and that conversations have taken place with Depp about returning. However, no final casting deal has been announced.
The sixth film has been in development for years and is expected to introduce new characters alongside elements of the established franchise. Margot Robbie has previously been linked to the project, although details of the story and cast remain under development.
Depp played Jack Sparrow in all five previous Pirates of the Caribbean films, beginning with The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. The franchise has earned more than $4.5 billion worldwide.
Bruckheimer’s latest comments offer the clearest recent indication that Depp could return, but his participation in the sixth film remains unconfirmed.
