The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has instructed educational institutions in selected areas of five districts to support a two-dose oral cholera vaccination campaign in high-risk areas.

The first dose of the preventive cholera vaccine was administered from August 22, while the second dose is scheduled to begin on September 26.

According to the DSHE directive, the campaign covers seven police station areas under Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations, as well as selected upazilas of Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj. People aged one year and above will be eligible for the vaccine, while pregnant women will be excluded.

In a letter signed by DSHE Director (Secondary) Prof Md Sakhawat Hossain Khan on Sunday, education officials concerned were instructed to take necessary measures to ensure the campaign's successful implementation.

The vaccination drive will be conducted in Gandaria, Kadamtali, Lalbagh, Kamrangirchar, Khilkhet, Tejgaon and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station areas of Dhaka. It will also cover Munshiganj Sadar, Narayanganj Sadar, Brahmanbaria Sadar and Nabinagar, and Karimganj, Tarail and Hossainpur upazilas of Kishoreganj.

Upazila and thana secondary education officers have been instructed to ensure that headteachers provide necessary assistance to officials and staff deployed by the Directorate General of Health Services.

The DSHE also asked district and upazila education offices to publicise the vaccination programme through their official Facebook pages and raise awareness among students and guardians.

Assistant upazila and thana secondary education officers have been asked to closely monitor the vaccination programme at schools and colleges under their respective clusters. Relevant officials at district, upazila and thana levels have also been instructed to conduct random inspections.

Teachers have been directed to actively support the campaign by assisting students with registration, ensuring vaccination, volunteering at vaccination centres and encouraging parents and local residents to receive the vaccine.

Assigned teachers will help students register for the vaccine using their birth registration numbers through vaxepi.gov.bd. ICT teachers will assist students who face difficulties with registration.

Educational institutions have also been asked to provide all necessary cooperation to health workers involved in the vaccination campaign.
