The second meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday, with committee chairman Mushfiqur Rahman in the chair.
The meeting stressed making accounting and financial reporting systems more transparent, modern and effective, saying greater accountability would improve efficiency and effectiveness.
It also emphasised reducing reliance on direct human contact in government services and introducing digital and automated systems to prevent corruption.
The committee observed that merely identifying and punishing individuals involved in corruption would not be enough. Instead, the processes and systems that enable corruption should be changed or removed.
Such measures would reduce costs and harassment for businesses, improve the business environment and help increase government revenue, the meeting observed.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) made a detailed presentation on its capacity to meet government expenditure, measures to narrow the tax-to-GDP gap, and its organisational structure and future course of action. Committee members discussed the issues raised in the presentation.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam Moni, and MPs Md Jalal Uddin, Moinul Islam Khan, Md Shahadat Hossain, Md Saiful Alam, Syed Zainul Abedin and Md Abul Hasnat attended the meeting.
Senior officials from the NBR, Finance Division, Financial Institutions Division, Economic Relations Division and Parliament Secretariat were also present.
