The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sought wealth statements from former Ekattor TV Head of News Shakil Ahmed and his wife, journalist Farzana Rupa, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.
In separate notices issued from its headquarters on Sunday, the ACC asked them to submit their wealth statements within 21 working days, said ACC Public Relations Officer Md Aktarul Islam.
Under Section 26(1) of the ACC Act, 2004, the notices seek details of all movable and immovable assets acquired in their names or in the names of their spouses and dependants, along with liabilities, sources of income and details of how the assets were acquired.
The notices said the statements must be submitted to the commission in the prescribed format within 21 working days of receiving them. Failure to submit the information within the stipulated time, or submission of false or incorrect information, may lead to legal action under Section 26(2) of the ACC Act.
Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa had worked at Ekattor TV for several years. On August 8, 2024, the television channel relieved them of their respective positions. Shakil was then Head of News, while Farzana was a Special Correspondent and presenter.
They were reportedly arrested on August 21 of the same year.
