Case filed against Dhaka Club president, 3 others

A former employee of Dhaka Club Limited has filed a case against its president and three senior officials, accusing them of withholding his dues and threatening to kill him.

The former employee, Ashik Molla, filed the case application before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman on Tuesday. After recording his statement, the court took cognisance of the complaint and ordered the accused to appear before it.

The accused are Dhaka Club president and Robin Printing and Packaging director Shamim Hossain, Director Finance Tuhin Reza, CEO and secretary Lt Col (retd) Sabbir Ahmed, and Chief Finance Officer Iqbal Hossain.

According to the case statement, Ashik joined Dhaka Club as an attendant on 23 November 2017 and was made permanent on 19 August 2018. He alleged that he was suspended on 26 January this year in violation of the service rules and was dismissed six months later, on 27 July.

He claimed that the club owed him Tk 490,000 in service benefits, provident fund, gratuity, notice pay and unpaid wages.

Ashik subsequently applied for mediation under Section 124A(5) of the Bangladesh Labour Act at the office of the Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments. As the accused did not attend the mediation despite receiving notices, the labour inspector issued him a written clearance, according to the case statement.

After receiving the clearance, Ashik went to Dhaka Club on 15 August. The accused allegedly gave him a cheque for Tk 116,981 but refused to pay the remaining Tk 373,019.

He further alleged that the accused threatened to kill him if he pressed them for the remaining amount.
