Children allegedly used to smuggle yaba in stomachs

A suspected drug trafficking ring allegedly used two children to smuggle yaba from Cox’s Bazar to Chattogram by making them swallow packets of the drug after promising them Tk 8,000 a month and grocery support for their families.

RAB-7 arrested alleged ring leader Sharmin Akter alias Ismat Ara and rescued the two children from Anwara upazila in Chattogram, RAB said on Monday.

The children, aged nine and 12, were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors recovered a total of 6,615 yaba tablets from their stomachs.

According to RAB, the children are from Alikadam upazila of Bandarban. The ring allegedly took them to an area near the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar and made them swallow small yaba packets wrapped in polythene.

Acting on intelligence, RAB-7 conducted a raid in the Sarkarhat area of Anwara and arrested Sharmin while taking the two children into custody, said Lt Commander Md Tawhidul Islam, company commander of RAB-7.

Medical examinations, including X-rays, confirmed the presence of yaba packets in the children’s stomachs. Doctors subsequently removed the packets through supervised treatment.

Of the recovered tablets, 3,300 were found in the nine-year-old’s stomach and 3,315 in the 12-year-old’s. The drugs were estimated to be worth around Tk 20 lakh, RAB said.

Tawhidul warned that carrying yaba in the stomach is extremely dangerous. If a packet leaks or ruptures, it could cause severe poisoning and potentially result in death, even without immediate symptoms.

RAB said efforts are underway to arrest other members of the suspected ring. Sharmin was handed over to Panchlaish Police Station along with the recovered evidence, and a case under the Narcotics Control Act is being processed.
