The government plans to plant 25 crore trees across Bangladesh over five years, with 5.14 crore saplings to be planted this year, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam said on Monday.

He called for turning tree plantation into a sustainable social movement to combat climate change, conserve biodiversity and maintain ecological balance.

Speaking at a meeting of the task force supporting the National Tree Plantation Cell at the Bangladesh Secretariat, the state minister said all ministries, departments, agencies and public and private organisations must work together to implement the programme.

According to the meeting, 5,14,88,930 saplings are planned to be planted in 2026. Around 3.82 crore will be produced by the participating agencies themselves, while nearly 1.33 crore will be procured through their own funding.

Various ministries and agencies are already planting saplings according to their respective targets. NGOs have also planted around 25 lakh saplings, according to data from the NGO Affairs Bureau.

Mangrove saplings will be planted in coastal areas in December to help meet this year’s target.

Sheikh Faridul stressed prioritising native fruit, forest and medicinal species suited to local weather, soil and ecosystems. He also called for planned plantation along suitable areas beside rivers, canals, embankments, roads and railway lines.

He said planting a sapling alone was not enough and instructed the relevant agencies to prepare four-year maintenance and care plans to ensure the saplings survive and grow.

The minister also directed officials to replace damaged or dead saplings promptly and take effective measures to protect newly planted trees.
