Boatman missing after falling from moving ferry into Kacha river in Pirojpur

A fishing trawler boatman went missing after falling from a moving ferry into the Kacha River in Charakhali ferry terminal area of Bhandaria upazila in Pirojpur on Sunday evening.

The missing man has been identified as Babul Majhi, 35, son of Md Harun Molla of Mallikerber village in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat. He worked as the boatman of a fishing trawler that operates in the Bay of Bengal.

According to locals and eyewitnesses, the ferry was approaching Charakhali terminal from Togora Ghat when Babul fell into the river approximately 50 to 100 feet before reaching the terminal. He was reportedly sitting on the railing at the front of the ferry when he suddenly fell into the river.

He was swept away within moments by the strong current and has remained missing since then.

After receiving the information, police from Bhandaria Police Station and a team from Fire Service and Civil Defence reached the spot and launched a rescue operation with the help of local volunteers. However, strong currents in the river hampered the search.

Abdus Sobhan, an officer at Bhandaria Fire Station, said a Fire Service team reached the scene immediately after receiving the report and began the rescue operation. The strong current initially hampered the search, he said, adding that a team of divers from Barishal would join the operation on Monday.

Bhandaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Dewan Jaglul Hasan said police members rushed to the scene after receiving the information and inspected the situation.

As of the latest update, Babul Majhi had not been found and the rescue operation was continuing. Necessary legal procedures are also underway, the OC added.
