Rumeen Farhana supporters allegedly attacked in Ashuganj

Two supporters of independent MP Rumeen Farhana were allegedly attacked by local BNP activists in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday afternoon.
The injured are Ataur Rahman, former convener of the Ashuganj upazila unit of Jubo Dal, and Russell Biplab, its former senior joint convener.
The incident reportedly took place in front of the Ashuganj Upazila Parishad complex when the two went there to discuss preparations for a reception programme for meritorious students.
The programme, organised by the Abdul Kadir Shah Library in Kholapara village of Lalpur Union, is scheduled to be held at the Upazila Parishad auditorium at 3 PM on September 18. Rumeen Farhana is expected to attend as the chief guest.
Ataur, who is also president of the library, had applied to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) on Tuesday for allocation of the auditorium.
Ataur and Russell went to the Upazila Parishad on Wednesday to discuss the venue allocation and other preparations. When they entered the UNO's office and found Ashuganj Upazila BNP President Shahjahan Siraj, General Secretary Habibur Rahman and Organising Secretary Kamal Hossain there, they did not enter the room.
They later went downstairs and were talking among themselves when several BNP supporters allegedly attacked them. Members of the village police deployed at the Upazila Parishad reached the spot and separated the two groups.
Russell alleged that Habibur Rahman himself led the attack with his supporters.
“Since MP Rumeen Farhana's victory, BNP activists have been treating us as their opponents,” he said.
Habibur denied the allegation, saying a scuffle broke out following an argument between their supporters over an issue involving drugs.
“I went there and sent them away,” he said.
Ashuganj UNO Md Jamal Hossain said an untoward incident had occurred in a field behind the Upazila Parishad.
“Rumeen Farhana is an honourable MP. If she wants, the reception programme will certainly be held,” he said.
