Jamaat leader demands withdrawal of Rizvi’s remarks linking party to train arson

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Dr Muhammad Rezaul Karim has demanded that BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi withdraw his remarks linking Jamaat-e-Islami to recent train arson incidents.

Karim, a member of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council and secretary of its Dhaka North city unit, made the demand while speaking at a representative conference organised by the Lakshmipur city unit of Jamaat at Shaheed Ahmad Zayed Auditorium on Thursday morning.

Karim alleged that Rizvi had made the remarks without any investigation, comparing his statements to those previously made by former Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

He said those responsible for any act of sabotage should be identified through investigation and that no political party should be linked to such incidents before reliable evidence is established.

Rizvi had recently accused opposition groups of involvement in arson and other destructive activities and referred to reports of fires on trains. He also questioned the use of fuel by the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance during its recent long march.

Jamaat has previously rejected Rizvi’s remarks linking the party to a recent train arson incident, calling for an impartial investigation and evidence to identify those responsible.

At Thursday’s programme, Karim also alleged that some people were making misleading statements after becoming concerned over public support for Jamaat’s long march.

The conference was presided over by Lakshmipur city Jamaat Ameer Advocate Abul Farah Nishan. District Jamaat Ameer Master Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, Naib-e-Ameer Advocate Nazir Ahmed, Maulana Nasiruddin Mahmud and other party leaders and activists attended the event.
