CUET students launch ‘Why 56’ campaign

Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) students on Sunday (September 27) launched a symbolic “Why 56” campaign, questioning the removal of former Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem just 56 days after he took charge and demanding his reinstatement.

The programme began around 2PM at the university’s Shaheed Minar as the students continued their complete shutdown for the sixth consecutive day. They carried placards bearing “56”, highlighting the brief duration of Prof Sayem’s tenure.

The students said the “56” campaign symbolically represents their questions over the reasons and process behind the decision to remove Sayem from the vice-chancellor’s post.

Later, the protesters marched from the Shaheed Minar towards Swadhinata Chattar, displaying the placards and chanting slogans demanding Sayem’s reinstatement. They also called for the Prime Minister’s intervention in the matter.

After the march, students returned to the Shaheed Minar area, where they staged a street play highlighting their questions and grievances over the change in the university’s leadership.

The protest began after the government removed Prof Sayem on September 21 and appointed Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam as the new CUET vice-chancellor. Students have continued their shutdown since September 22, with classes and examinations remaining suspended.

The protesters said they would continue their movement until the decision is withdrawn and Prof Sayem is reinstated.
