A young man narrowly escaped a fatal accident on the Brahmaputra Rail Bridge in Mymensingh on Sunday (September 27) morning due to the swift action and presence of mind of a train driver.
The incident occurred at around 10:10 AM when the Haor Express (Train No. 778) was crossing the Brahmaputra Rail Bridge.
According to the train's locomaster, Enayet Dhruba, he sounded long warning whistles two to three times while passing the Golai area before entering the bridge, while traveling at a speed of 35 to 40 km per hour.
Upon entering the bridge, the driver spotted a young man holding an umbrella and walking directly along the railway tracks about 50 to 60 yards ahead.
The driver immediately pulled the throttle to idle, applied the emergency brakes, and continuously sounded the horn.
Hearing the loud horn, the young man paused, looked back at the approaching train, and began running forward along the bridge tracks.
To prevent the panic-stricken youth from jumping off the bridge into the river, the driver brought the train down to walking speed and cautiously followed behind.
The young man eventually reached a small safety alcove on the side of the bridge, closed his umbrella, and pressed himself against the railing until the train safely passed.
Locomaster Enayet Dhruba expressed gratitude that a major tragedy was averted and urged the public to refrain from walking on railway bridges.
