Garment workers and labour leaders in Gazipur have demanded that the minimum monthly wage in the sector be raised to Tk 30,000, citing rising living costs and inflation.
A discussion and workers' rally was held at Sagar Saikat Convention Hall in the Gazipur Chowrasta area on Friday (October 2), organised by the Garments Federation Oikya Parishad (GFOP).
Workers from different parts of Gazipur joined the rally in processions and later took position on a highway.
Labour leaders said the minimum wage should be revised in line with the rising cost of living and the current economic situation.
Akash Ahmed Babul, general secretary of the Garment Workers Trade Union Federation, said they were giving the authorities until December to implement the Tk 30,000 minimum wage.
He warned that a nationwide movement would begin from December 1 if the demand was not implemented.
The rally was attended by leaders of several garment workers' federations, who also called for stronger protection of workers' rights and peaceful movements to press their demands.
