Two arrested over Nisha's death in Dhaka

Police have arrested two people, including a woman, on charges of abetting the suicide of Nisha Rani, 28, at Miron Jilla Harijan Palli in Bangshal, Dhaka.

The arrestees are Minakshi Rani, 30, and Biki Babu alias Sri Biki Hela.

DMP Joint Commissioner (Crime) Md Faruk Hossain disclosed the information at a briefing on Monday.

According to police, Nisha went to Minakshi’s residence on October 2 after becoming upset over Minakshi’s relationship with Biki. Police said the two allegedly insulted and verbally abused Nisha over her objection to their relationship, leaving her distressed.

At around 3am, Nisha allegedly poured kerosene over herself and set herself on fire at Minakshi’s residence in City Colony. Neighbours rescued her and took her to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she died on October 4.

Following a complaint from Nisha’s family, Bangshal police filed a case. Police identified and arrested Minakshi from the Bangshal area and Biki from a highway hotel in Sirajganj using CCTV footage, intelligence and technological assistance.

The two were sent to court, police said.
