A police constable died after being critically injured when a bus hit his motorcycle while he was chasing a suspected mugger in Chattogram.
Constable Al Amin Sardar, 25, died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital at around 3:40 AM on Monday while undergoing treatment.
Al Amin, a member of the Public Order Management (POM) branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), was attached to Kotwali Police Station. He joined Bangladesh Police in 2022.
His family home is in Uttar Dudhkhali area of Madaripur Sadar upazila. His father is Abdul Haque Sardar.
Police said Al Amin and several other police members were on duty at a checkpoint in the Wasa intersection area on Sunday morning when they noticed three youths behaving suspiciously and signalled them to stop.
When one of them tried to flee, checkpoint in-charge Hiron Mia chased him.
Meanwhile, Al Amin rode his motorcycle towards the western gate. At that time, a bus of Leaders School and College, travelling at high speed, hit his motorcycle from behind and dragged it for some distance.
Other police members at the checkpoint, with the help of locals, later seized the bus and detained its driver.
CMP Senior Assistant Commissioner (Public Relations) Aminur Rashid confirmed Al Amin’s death early Monday.
He said bus driver Mosharraf and its staff member Joy Das had been arrested in connection with the incident.
A case has been filed against them under the Road Transport Act with Kotwali Police Station.
