Chases and counter-chases are underway between police and garment workers in the capital's Mirpur area after the readymade garment workers blocked the road for the second consecutive day, disrupting factory activities, triggering severe traffic congestion around Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-11.
The workers took to the streets on roads around Mirpur-10 and nearby areas at about 8:45AM on Monday and staged demonstrations, disrupting traffic in the area.
Police later chased the protesters to disperse them from the street.
On Sunday (November 1), garment workers also blocked roads around Mirpur-10 and adjoining areas, demanding a minimum monthly wage. The protests were marred by clashes with police, arson targeting a police vehicle and other acts of sabotage. Police have since arrested several members of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations over their alleged involvement in the incidents.
Meanwhile, garment workers in Gazipur blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Monday morning over their wage demands. Ten platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with additional police personnel, were deployed at the scene to maintain law and order and bring the situation under control.
