Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested an alleged smuggler along with 10 gold bars worth around Tk 2.5 crore in Chuadanga’s Darshana upazila early Monday.

The arrested was identified as Alamgir Khan, 55, a resident of Mubarak Para area under Darshana municipality.

According to a press release issued by Chuadanga-6 BGB Battalion, the drive was conducted based on intelligence reports that a consignment of gold was being smuggled across the border into India.

Acting on a tip-off, a BGB patrol team took position near Darshana Old Railway Station around 6:00 AM and kept surveillance on suspicious movement. At one stage, a suspect attempting to move towards the border was signalled to stop. He tried to flee but was chased and apprehended by the patrol team.

Upon searching his body, BGB members recovered two tape-wrapped packets concealed around his waist. The packets contained 10 gold bars.

Officials said the seized gold weighs approximately 1.166 kilograms, with an estimated market value of Tk 2,47,89,160.

BGB officials confirmed that legal action against the accused is underway.
