Two men died after coming into contact with a live electric wire that had snapped during a storm at Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh district.

The incident occurred at around 2:15 PM on Friday at Bhatta village under Rupsi union of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Tajuddin, 40, son of late Shukur Ali and Arshab Ali, 60, both residents of Bhatta village.

According to police and local sources, Tajuddin was drying straw near his home in the afternoon. Unbeknownst to him, a live electricity wire, which had snapped during strong winds earlier, was lying hidden under the straw and Tajuddin accidentally touched the wire and collapsed on the ground.

Arshab Ali, walking by on his way to work in a nearby field rushed to rescue Tajuddin but was also severely electrocuted in the process.

Locals rescued both men and rushed them to Phulpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

The families initially took the bodies back home, but police later visited the scene to prepare the inquest reports and took custody of the bodies for legal procedures.

Phulpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Abul Bashar said, "Upon receiving the news, we recovered the bodies and brought them to the police station.’’

Further legal action will be taken based on the complaints filed by the families of the victims, the SI added.
