Lalmohan human chain calls for repair of risky bridge

LALMOHAN, BHOLA, June 21: A human chain was formed in Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola on Sunday, demanding urgent repair of a bridge over the Lalmohan canal, which locals say has become dangerously steep and prone to accidents.

Residents alleged that the bridge, located near the Dakbangla area under the municipality, was constructed in an unplanned manner, making it excessively high and hazardous for pedestrians and vehicles. Locals often describe it as “a hill, not a bridge,” they said.

The bridge has reportedly become a constant source of fear for residents, market traders and commuters since its construction, with repeated accidents raising concerns over possible fatalities.

The human chain was organised under the banner of “Amra Westernpara Elakabashi” on the bridge site in the morning with the slogan “No more accidents, we want a safe bridge.”

Speakers at the programme said the structure poses serious risks to students, pedestrians and drivers due to its steep height and lack of adequate safety measures and warning infrastructure.

They said repeated accidents have already caused injuries to several people. A nearby Qawmi madrasa has further increased safety concerns, as hundreds of students use the bridge daily for commuting.

Among others, Lalmohan Islamia Kamil Madrasa Principal Maulana Md Mosharraf Hossain, Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Md Abdul Haque, former Ward Commissioner Md Amzad Hossain Alam, former Farajganj Union Parishad Chairman Md Abul Bashar Selim, and Nazrul Rahman College Professor Md Kamal Hossain Shahin spoke at the event.

They urged authorities to take immediate steps to repair the bridge and ensure safe movement for local residents.
