A prisoner serving life term imprisonment in a rape case died at Kushtia District Jail on Tuesday night after falling ill.
The deceased is Ariful Islam, 27, son of Abdul Karim of Rajinathpur village in Khoksa upazila of the district.
He had been serving a life sentence in a rape case since 2019.
According to prison authorities, Ariful suddenly complained of severe chest pain inside the jail around 8:30pm and became critically ill.
He was immediately taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital Dr Iqbal Hasan said the prisoner died before being brought to the hospital.
Jail Superintendent Shariful Alam said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy. After completion of the post-mortem examination and other legal formalities, the body will be handed over to the family.
