A clash between two rival factions of the BNP in Jamalpur's Islampur upazila resulted in the vandalism of the personal vehicle of MP Sultan Mahmud Babu and a retaliatory attack on the car of Upazila BNP General Secretary Nurul Islam Nawab on Friday evening.

The incident took place at the Islampur Dak Bungalow premises following an internal dispute within the BNP. Although no casualties were reported, one faction alleged that the attack was carried out on the instructions of the MP's daughter.

According to local sources, tensions began earlier in the day during a reception for MP Sultan Mahmud Babu at Molomganj Model College, where leaders and activists from two BNP factions became involved in a heated argument over seating arrangements on the stage.

After the event, the MP went to the Dak Bungalow, where a group of individuals allegedly attacked and vandalized his personal vehicle. In retaliation, supporters targeted and damaged the vehicle used by Upazila BNP General Secretary Nurul Islam Nawab.

Both groups reportedly gathered with sticks and locally made weapons, creating panic and tension in the area.

Speaking over the phone, MP Sultan Mahmud Babu said miscreants had vandalized his vehicle in an attempt to damage his reputation and create unrest in the area.

Nurul Islam Nawab said the disagreement at the reception had been resolved on the spot and that he and the MP had traveled to the Dak Bungalow in his vehicle. While performing ablution for Maghrib prayers, he heard that vehicles were being vandalized.

Nawab alleged that the MP's daughter had instructed supporters to vandalize his car. However, because both vehicles were black, the attackers mistakenly damaged the MP's vehicle first before later targeting his own.

He further claimed that the MP sidelines local party leaders and relies heavily on the decisions of his two daughters, adding that he had become an obstacle to them, which led to the incident.

Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said police rushed to the scene after receiving the information and brought the situation under control. He added that MP Sultan Mahmud Babu was safely escorted to his residence around 8:00 pm and that legal action would be taken if a written complaint is filed.
