Fishing in Kaptai Lake to resume from midnight of Aug 10

Fishing in South Asia's largest man-made body of water, Kaptai Lake in Rangamati, will open from midnight on Monday, August 10.

Rangamati District Commissioner and Secretary of the Lake Management Committee Nazma Ashrafi gave this decision on Monday, July 27, during a meeting of the Kaptai Lake Management Committee regarding permission for fish harvesting and marketing in Kaptai Lake.

The meeting was held at the Rangamati District Commissioner's Office. Fishing in the lake will be allowed from that day.

The Kaptai Lake Management Committee decided to lift the ban after keeping fish harvesting suspended in the lake for 3 months and 15 days.

The district administration stated that a ban was imposed on fish harvesting for three months from April 25 to ensure natural breeding, propagation, and production of carp species in Kaptai Lake during the current season.

Since the breeding season was completed smoothly during this period, the decision was made to lift the ban from midnight of August 10.

Nazma Ashrafi, Secretary of the Kaptai Lake Management Committee and District Commissioner, said that the decision to withdraw the fishing ban in Kaptai Lake from midnight of August 10 was made based on the opinions of responsible authorities of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), traders' associations, fishermen, and all stakeholders. Fish harvesting, transportation, and marketing from the lake can be carried out from 6:00AM on August 11.

Among others, Rangamati Additional District Magistrate Nishat Sharmin, Rangamati Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Iqbal Hossain, Rangamati BFDC Manager Commander Faez Al Karim, District Fisheries Officer Md. Mizanur Rahman, BFRI Chief Scientific Officer Haider Hossain, fish trader Udayan Barua, fish trader Md. Mahfuz, fish trader Md. Abdul Shukkur, and other traders were present at the meeting organized by the Kaptai Lake Management Committee.
