Water trader dies days after alleged assault in Khilgaon

A 40-year-old water trader died on Saturday, three days after he was allegedly abducted, beaten and left on railway tracks in Dhaka’s Khilgaon area, police said.

The deceased, Kamruzzaman Khan Dipu, was initially admitted to Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital in critical condition before being shifted to Mugda Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Khilgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said Dipu was allegedly picked up by a group of men from the Railgate area on July 29 following a previous dispute. He was reportedly assaulted and abandoned on nearby railway tracks before relatives rescued him and took him to hospital.

Police later recovered the body from Mugda Medical College Hospital and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

According to the OC, the assault is believed to have stemmed from an earlier conflict, although the victim’s family said the dispute had already been settled. A case has been filed against unidentified suspects, and an investigation is underway.

Dipu’s family alleged that 10 to 12 unidentified assailants were involved in the attack.
