World Elephant Day observed in Kaptai

Kaptai Range of the Chittagong Hill Tracts South Forest Division organized a rally and discussion to mark the World Elephant day on Wednesday (August 12).

At the discussion, speakers urged the public to protect elephant habitats, avoid obstructing corridor routes, and refrain from risking their lives by taking photos or videos near wild elephants.

The discussion was held at the Kaptai Upazila Parishad auditorium at 11:30AM. CHT South Forest Division Assistant Conservator of Forests Md Jamal Hossain Talukder presided over the function, while Assistant Information Officer Md Delowar Hossain moderated it.

Kaptai Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rayhanul Islam attended the event as the chief guest. Kaptai Range Officer Md Mamunur Rahman delivered the welcome address.

Former Kaptai Upazila Parishad Chairman Dildar Hossain, Kaptai Upazila BNP President Lokman Ahmed, and Karnafuli Range Officer Fazle Rabbi Sarkar spoke as special guests.

Speakers noted that the wild elephant population in Kaptai National Park increased from 36 in 2024 to approximately 42-45 currently. Despite the rise in population, severe food shortages force elephants into human settlements, increasing human-elephant conflict.

"We must save elephants for our own survival," speakers emphasized, highlighting that deforestation has drastically reduced natural habitats and food sources.

They urged people to maintain a safe distance when elephants enter residential areas and inform the forest department immediately rather than approaching to take photos or videos.

Earlier, a colorful rally comprising students, forest officials, media personnel, and local beneficiaries paraded key roads in the upazila.

Following the discussion, 100 saplings of fruit, timber, and medicinal plants were distributed free among students to mark the occasion.
