A court in Lalmonirhat on Sunday sentenced the principal accused in the widely discussed murder of seven-year-old Nandini to death. The court also sentenced his parents to five years in prison each and fined them Tk 5,000 each.
Lalmonirhat District and Sessions Judge Haider Ali pronounced the verdict at noon. The convicted persons Bidhan Chandra, his father Ranjit Kumar and mother Mamata Rani were present in the courtroom during the pronouncement. Nandini’s family members expressed satisfaction with the death sentence and demanded its speedy execution.
State counsel Advocate Humayun Reza Swapan said the trial of the sensational murder case was completed and the verdict delivered within just six working days. He expressed satisfaction over the speedy disposal of the case.
Nandini’s father Nalini Mohan Barman said they were satisfied with the court’s verdict and hoped the death sentence against the principal accused would be executed soon.
Nandini went missing from her home in Phalimari village under Velabari Union of Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat on the afternoon of June 16. Her family members and locals searched for her throughout the night but failed to locate her. The following morning, locals noticed that the soil in a nearby maize field appeared unusually soft. Suspecting something was buried there, they dug up the soil and recovered Nandini’s body, wrapped in a sack.
The recovery of the child’s body sparked tension in the area. Based on allegations from the family, locals moved to detain Bidhan Chandra, but an agitated mob set fire to his house.
A clash subsequently broke out between police and locals as law enforcement personnel attempted to bring the situation under control. Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rashedul Haque Pradhan went to the scene after being informed of the incident. At one point, the agitated crowd attacked their convoy and vandalised vehicles. At least 18 police personnel were injured in the clashes.
Additional police personnel and members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed to bring the situation under control. The situation later returned to normal following intervention by law enforcement agencies.
Locals have expressed relief over the speedy trial and verdict in the high-profile murder case and said they expect the court’s sentence to be implemented soon.
