Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian on Sunday called for modern technology and stricter safety measures to ensure “zero casualties” in the shipbreaking industry.

“The industry must survive, but workers’ safety must be fully ensured,” he said at a compensation distribution programme at Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries in Bhatiari, Sitakunda.

Ten workers died after being exposed to toxic hydrogen sulphide gas while working inside a ballast tank of the scrap vessel MT Rasi at the yard on August 14. Nine died at the scene and another later succumbed during treatment.

Zahidul Islam said neither the yard authorities nor local explosives experts had the technology required to safely detect and remove the gas. He stressed the need for advanced technology and greater caution when purchasing and dismantling LNG carriers and other gas-carrying vessels.

Three committees have been formed to investigate the accident. Experts are examining how the gas accumulated inside the vessel and why it was not removed before dismantling began. Necessary action will be taken after the investigation report is submitted, the DC said.

The Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association and the yard authorities announced Tk 10 lakh for each victim’s family. Cheques for the remaining Tk 7 lakh were handed over on Sunday, after Tk 1 lakh was paid immediately and Tk 2 lakh deposited with the relevant ministry.

The district administration also provided Tk 25,000 each to five victims’ families living in Sitakunda. The other families will receive the same amount from the district administrations of their permanent addresses.

“No amount of money can compensate for the loss of a human life. The assistance is meant to prevent families from becoming destitute after losing their breadwinners,” Zahidul said.

Around 250,000 people depend directly or indirectly on the shipbreaking industry, he added.
