State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam has said water tanks will be provided to every household in coastal areas to store rainwater and help ease the shortage of safe drinking water.
He made the remarks on Sunday (August 23) while distributing polymer water tanks among residents of Burirdanga Union in the Digaraj area of Mongla upazila in Bagerhat.
Later, the state minister distributed tanks among residents of Chila, Chandpai, Sonailtala, Mithakhali and Sundarban unions on the upazila parishad premises.
On the day, water tanks were distributed among more than 300 families from six unions of the upazila.
Speaking at the event, Sheikh Faridul Islam said Mongla and surrounding coastal areas, which are severely affected by salinity, face a serious shortage of safe drinking water. To address the crisis, the distribution of water tanks among coastal communities is being continued so that rainwater can be stored and used to meet household needs.
He further said, “Water tanks will be provided to every household in the coastal areas.” The government has also taken an initiative to re-excavate government-owned ponds to create additional sources of safe drinking water.
“We are taking all necessary measures so that no one in the coastal areas has to suffer for safe drinking water,” he added.
Among others, Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sharmin Akter Sumi, Department of Public Health Engineering Mongla Sub-Assistant Engineer Sohan Ahmed, Mongla Upazila BNP President A Mannan Howlader, Mongla Pourashava BNP Organising Secretary Golam Nur Jony, BNP leaders Moazzem Hossain and Mostafizur Rahman Jony were present at the tank distribution programme.
