Farmers broke open the door of a fertiliser dealer’s warehouse in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram on Sunday and took away 197 sacks of urea fertiliser amid concerns over a shortage.
The incident occurred around 11am at the fertiliser dealer point of Messrs Shah Amanat in Mukul of Shilkhuri Union. More than 200 farmers had gathered there to buy fertiliser. After waiting for a long time without being able to purchase fertiliser, some of them broke open the warehouse door and took away 197 sacks, each weighing 50kg, or a total of 9,850kg of urea fertiliser.
Police reached the spot after being informed and brought the situation under control. Later, 33 farmers returned 33 sacks of fertiliser. Police are trying to recover the remaining sacks.
Police and local residents said dealer Taifur Rahman Mukul had been allocated 1,320 sacks of fertiliser, while 340 sacks were stored at the warehouse. Farmers became agitated after allegedly failing to purchase fertiliser according to their requirements.
Bhurungamari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azimuddin said the union’s demand was around 4,000 sacks, against an allocation of 1,320 sacks, while the actual amount lifted by the dealer was even lower. He said the dealer had been delaying the supply of fertiliser to farmers, prompting them to break into the warehouse amid fears that they would not get fertiliser.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Jabbar said the upazila’s demand for urea fertiliser in August was 680 tonnes and that the allocated amount had been received and was being distributed. “There is no shortage of urea fertiliser in the upazila,” he said, adding that the farmers may have acted out of panic and that efforts were underway to recover the remaining sacks.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amrit Debnath said fertiliser distribution was being carried out peacefully at the point in Dhaldanga of Shilkhuri Union in the presence of law enforcement personnel, agriculture officials and local representatives. He said some people spread panic and broke open the warehouse before distribution began. The authorities had recovered some of the fertiliser and were working to recover the rest, he added.
