A local Awami League leader accused in a murder case joined a celebration rally in Thakurgaon’s Bhulli on Sunday, where two local BNP leaders were seen feeding him sweets.

The rally was organised by teachers and students of Bhulli Degree College and Kumarpur High School to celebrate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s election as president.

The rally began at the Bhulli Degree College field at noon, passed through several roads and returned to the college campus, where participants distributed sweets.

Julfikar Ali, organisational secretary of the banned Thakurgaon district Awami League and principal of Bhulli Degree College, was seen joining the rally. A video of the event later circulated on Facebook, sparking discussion and criticism in the district.

According to eyewitnesses and the video, college teacher and Sadar upazila BNP vice-president Nazmul Islam Lal and Bhulli Girls’ High School assistant teacher and district BNP fisheries affairs secretary Mizanur Rahman were seen feeding sweets to Julfikar.

Julfikar is a named accused in a case filed over the deaths of four young men during the anti-discrimination student movement in Thakurgaon on August 5, 2024. The case was filed by Fazle Alam, father of deceased student Abu Raihan, at the Thakurgaon Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on September 2 that year.

July movement activists criticised the participation of a murder case accused in a public programme.

“Many of our fellow activists were injured and some were killed during the movement. It is deeply disappointing to see a person named in a murder case related to the movement joining a public rally,” said July fighter Abu Bakkar.

July movement coordinator Raihan Apu also criticised the incident, saying those involved should explain why a person named in a murder case was allowed to join the rally and was publicly fed sweets.

Some local BNP leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that Nazmul Islam Lal and Mizanur Rahman had encouraged Julfikar to join the rally. They called for the BNP to investigate the matter.

Contacted for comments, Nazmul Islam Lal and Mizanur Rahman did not answer their phones.

District BNP General Secretary Md Poygam Ali said the party had seen the incident on social media.

“If Julfikar Ali is an accused in a case, his participation in the rally is a personal matter. There was no organisational decision or involvement of the BNP in the incident. We will look into the matter,” he said.
