Chinese students’ interest in Bangla grows at DU

Interest among Chinese students in studying the Bangla language and Bangladeshi culture at Dhaka University (DU) is growing, with the number of students taking a special Bangla course rising by 73 per cent in the last three years.

The number of Chinese students enrolled in the special Bangla course at the Institute of Modern Languages increased from 15 to 26 ocer that time.

They made a courtesy call on DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam at his office on Monday. 

DU VC stressed the importance of language and cultural exchanges in further strengthening friendly relations between Bangladesh and China.

He said China is one of Bangladesh’s major development partners and that learning each other’s languages can help deepen communication, mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of the two countries.

He also said DU wants to give greater importance to learning Chinese as a third language and expand opportunities for Chinese students to learn Bangla and about Bangladeshi culture at DU. 

Director of the Institute of Modern Languages Professor Mohammad Abchar Kamal and other teachers were present at the meeting.
