Ferry service suspended for six days on Dhowapara-Nazirganj route

Hundreds of vehicles are being forced to turn back from the Dhowapara-Nazirganj ferry terminals as services remain suspended due to rising water levels and strong currents in the Padma, disrupting transport between Rajbari and Pabna.
The suspension has forced many travellers to take longer alternative routes, increasing both travel time and transport costs.
Some people are crossing the river by engine-powered trawlers and speedboats despite the risks. However, a shortage of life jackets on the vessels has raised safety concerns amid the strong current.
According to terminal sources, services were suspended on September 6 after the river’s water level and current began rising.
Of the two ferries stationed at Dhowapara terminal, one has been out of service for a long time, while the other cannot operate safely because of the strong current.
Locals said ferry services on the route are frequently disrupted because of ageing ferries and inadequate maintenance. They urged the authorities to deploy an alternative ferry and repair the faulty vessel as soon as possible.
Suman Khan, terminal superintendent of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Dhowapara ferry terminal, said the strong current had forced the suspension.
“The need for a ferry has been communicated to the higher authorities. They are looking into the matter,” he said.
Locals fear that the suffering of passengers and transport operators will increase if ferry services are not restored soon.
