Rodri grateful to Mourinho despite rejecting Real Madrid offer

Spanish midfielder Rodri has revealed that he rejected an offer from Real Madrid before joining Barcelona, but remains grateful to coach Jose Mourinho for his interest and behaviour towards him.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Rodri said turning down Madrid was not an easy decision. He said he ultimately chose Barcelona after considering where he could develop further as a player.

“I was attracted by the sporting project. I thought about where I could improve and develop more as a player,” Rodri said.

He added that Barcelona sporting director Deco and coach Hansi Flick’s plans convinced him to join the Catalan club.

Rodri also spoke personally with Mourinho, who wanted to sign him. Although he did not reveal details of their conversation, Rodri said he called Mourinho after making his decision to thank him for his interest and good behaviour.

“He is a great coach and has proved his ability wherever he has worked,” Rodri said. “Real Madrid will be a tough opponent in La Liga.”

Rodri also dismissed suggestions that issues involving Vinicius Junior or the Ballon d’Or influenced his decision, saying he preferred to focus on football.
