Ex-OC Rakibul arrested over viral audio

Former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Cantonment Police Station, Md Rakibul Hasan, was arrested in a sedition case on Thursday (September 24) following the circulation of an audio recording on social media.

The authorities are expected to produce him before a court shortly, reports said.

Rakibul was withdrawn from the Cantonment Police Station on September 17 and attached to the central reserve office under the DMP headquarters and administration division following the controversy surrounding the audio recording.

The audio, which recently went viral on social media, purportedly contained a conversation concerning the possible return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh and the role of police.

However, Rakibul had claimed in a Facebook post that the viral recording was created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The authenticity and context of the recording have been the subject of scrutiny.

The latest arrest comes as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the audio and the allegations linked to it.
